Installing the Energy Manager solution provided more insights than we imagined. Our Smart Meter was advising how much energy was being used but didn’t answer the question of where this energy was being used (and in our case, where it was being wasted). We already have identified potential savings that will pay back the cost of the Energy Managers in less than a year.

The Installation

We began by installing a a system of 8 CT based 3 phase meters from Eastron at our main distribution board, this covered all the sub mains feeding various distribution boards and heavy loads around the facility. This gave us some interesting insights into our electrical usage and ultimately led to the addition of a separate Energy Manager system installed at our Office Distribution board with multiple circuits monitored using single phase meters in a custom enclosure. This approach allowed us to pinpoint exactly where our energy was being consumed.

Gaining Insights

The installation of the Energy Manager solution provided valuable insights, allowing us to make data-driven decisions to reduce waste and lower our energy bills, as explained by our Head of Product, Ian Florey.

Key Discoveries

After just one month of monitoring, we made a surprising discovery. Even when the building was unoccupied, we were still consuming around 30kWh a day! Daily reports from the office system revealed that much of this usage came from “vampire loads”—devices like phone chargers and PCs in standby mode. However, the biggest energy consumer was our on-premise server. This insight led us to accelerate our migration to cloud infrastructure, significantly reducing our building’s energy consumption.

Results and Future Savings

In the short term, we expect to save 10% on our energy costs after implementing a few initial changes. As we continue to learn more about our building’s energy usage through our detailed reports and make further adjustments, we anticipate these savings will increase.

The experience at our office demonstrates the power of the Energy Manager in providing detailed, actionable insights into energy consumption. By identifying inefficiencies and making informed changes, businesses can not only save money but also contribute to a more sustainable future.
